Speaker:

Do you ever find yourself turning to your

phone without even thinking about it?

2

:

Or do you get sucked into

scrolling and regret not using

3

:

that time for something else?

4

:

You are not alone.

5

:

I'm Alex, a Screen Time Mentor for

Young Moms, and I'm here to help you

6

:

get a grip on your own screen time

so you can be present, intentional,

7

:

and live a more fulfilling life.

8

:

Welcome to the Mindful With Media Podcast.

9

:

Welcome today.

10

:

I'm going to be sharing more details

of the peaceful phone challenge.

11

:

And when this episode goes live,

tomorrow will be Thanksgiving.

12

:

I love this time of year and music

just adds to the joy of the season.

13

:

So.

14

:

A couple of years ago, I put together

a Thanksgiving playlist and I'll

15

:

include it in the show notes.

16

:

It's for all of you who give

me a hard time about listening

17

:

to Christmas music too early.

18

:

And I only know of a few

specific Thanksgiving songs.

19

:

So.

20

:

The music on this playlist are songs

that give me the Thanksgiving feels.

21

:

So they're all about family and

gratitude and coming home and just

22

:

relishing and simple goodness.

23

:

But this time of year can

also be a little bit crazy.

24

:

The holidays include lots of events,

family breakfasts, Christmas parties.

25

:

Church programs, et cetera,

et cetera, et cetera.

26

:

It can be overwhelming with gifts,

deciding what to buy and ordering

27

:

gifts and wrapping presents.

28

:

And.

29

:

Lots of traveling this time of year.

30

:

And there always can be some family

drama when you get together with people.

31

:

It's just.

32

:

A lot that happens this time

of year with all the holidays.

33

:

And if you remember in episode 26 of

the podcast, I talked about the power

34

:

of living intentionally that you really

have so much power in how you live your

35

:

life and what you experience in life.

36

:

And that's something that I really

try to lean into to this idea that . I

37

:

get to design a life that I love.

38

:

And if you missed that episode,

make sure to listen to it.

39

:

It's called stop.

40

:

Living your life on

autopilot it's episode 26.

41

:

But in relation to this concept of.

42

:

Living a life that you want to live.

43

:

I've been reflecting on the upcoming

holidays and I've been thinking about

44

:

what I want my experiences to be

and what I want to feel this season.

45

:

And there were two words

that kept coming to my mind.

46

:

And those words were peaceful.

47

:

And present.

48

:

So during this time of year, that can

be chaotic and overwhelming and busy.

49

:

I really want to feel peace.

50

:

I really want to slow down and

just be still and feel calm and

51

:

restful and quiet and tranquil.

52

:

So while I can't control the world and

the things that happen around me, I can

53

:

control myself and how I feel inside.

54

:

And later on in the episode,

I'm going to be sharing how I

55

:

plan to do that this season.

56

:

The second word that I want to feel

this season is I want to be present.

57

:

So being present means

that you're focused.

58

:

And engaged in the here and now, and

you're not distracted or mentally

59

:

absent, so whatever you're doing.

60

:

In whatever moment you're totally focused

and totally engaged in that moment.

61

:

So in this season of.

62

:

Gathering and family and.

63

:

Focusing on Christ in a lot of ways.

64

:

That's, I'm a Christian and I believe

in Christ and I really believe in.

65

:

And focusing on Christ this season.

66

:

It's really easy to feel distracted

or my mind can start racing about all

67

:

of the things that I need to do or get

done, but I really want to feel focused

68

:

and engaged with the people I'm with

and on the things that I'm experiencing

69

:

at this beautiful time of year.

70

:

I don't want to be worried or

distracted or mentally absent.

71

:

I really want to relish in the good

that comes from this time of year.

72

:

So in order to feel peace and be present

this time of year, I've decided to

73

:

take on a 30 day challenge that I'm

calling the peaceful phone challenge.

74

:

And I will start this

on Saturday, November 25th.

75

:

And I'll do it each day until Sunday.

76

:

December 24th.

77

:

So it's basically from Thanksgiving

until Christmas and each day I'm

78

:

going to be doing three things.

79

:

First.

80

:

I'm going to charge my

phone outside of my room.

81

:

And you hear people talk about doing this.

82

:

But until you try it, you don't

realize what a difference it makes.

83

:

As I've charged my phone in

a different room at night.

84

:

. It gives my mind time to

relax before falling asleep.

85

:

And my mind doesn't race about

everything like it used to.

86

:

I have time to think, to ponder,

to process, to disconnect

87

:

from the noise of the world.

88

:

And I'll have to say.

89

:

If you're not used to doing this, it can

feel a little uncomfortable at first to.

90

:

Not have anything to.

91

:

Distract your mind.

92

:

As you are getting ready to go to bed.

93

:

And I talk a little bit more about

that in episode 20 of the podcast, how

94

:

to make yourself go to bed on time.

95

:

But charging my phone outside of my room.

96

:

I really feel like this will

help me to feel more peace and

97

:

be more present this season.

98

:

Because as I do this, I also have

time to connect with myself and

99

:

connect with God in the morning.

100

:

And just that little distance

between me and my phone.

101

:

Create space for me to breathe,

to feel peace, to feel present.

102

:

And if you've never done this before,

if you've never charged your phone

103

:

in a different room, You might

have some doubts coming up or it

104

:

might feel a little bit daunting.

105

:

You might be wondering.

106

:

How will you wake up without an alarm?

107

:

Or what if someone needs

to get a hold of you?

108

:

Or what, if you miss an important

message and you get to decide

109

:

what will work best for you, but I

really encourage you to just try it.

110

:

By a super cheap alarm clock.

111

:

If you need to, I used to use an alarm.

112

:

That I bought on Amazon and now I

just use the alarm on my apple watch.

113

:

And you might miss

important messages, but.

114

:

Honestly, most likely you won't.

115

:

And to me, the risk of maybe

missing something is totally worth

116

:

the trade-off of not missing.

117

:

Feeling peaceful and present.

118

:

The second thing that I'm

going to do each day of this.

119

:

30 day.

120

:

Peaceful phone challenge.

121

:

Is I'm going to put my phone

in a different room for five

122

:

minutes and be fully present.

123

:

So one time, each day, I will

choose to be fully present by

124

:

putting my phone in another room.

125

:

And fully engaging with

whoever or whatever I'm doing.

126

:

And this might seem like

such a short amount of time.

127

:

And like, it wouldn't make a difference

because honestly, I probably already

128

:

do this without thinking about it,

but intentionally doing this each day.

129

:

Has compounding effects.

130

:

Research shows that when you

practice being present, this makes

131

:

it easier for you to not only

deal with something stressful.

132

:

That happens right then in that

moment, but you're also better able

133

:

to cope with stressful things that

happen later, whether that's the

134

:

same day or farther in the future.

135

:

So during this crazy time of year,

when stressful things can happen or.

136

:

Family drama can happen or

whatever high things can happen.

137

:

As I.

138

:

Practice being fully present

for just five minutes a day.

139

:

I really think this will help me

to feel more peace this season.

140

:

And also there is power and being

completely present for even a

141

:

really short period of time.

142

:

Rather than like partially present only

partly there for a longer period of time.

143

:

Whether that's with your kids

or your spouse or your friends.

144

:

The quality of your time often

matters more than the quantity.

145

:

So for me to make it easier to

remember, to actually do this each day.

146

:

I'm going to choose a

specific time each day.

147

:

And I've decided that I want to

be fully present with my husband.

148

:

For the five minutes

after our kids go to bed.

149

:

But if you choose to join in

this challenge, feel free to

150

:

do whatever works best for you.

151

:

You could choose a new person each day.

152

:

You can choose a new activity each day.

153

:

You could do it right before you go to

bed, you could do it right after nap time.

154

:

You could do it right before nap time.

155

:

You could do it during dinner

or during lunch or breakfast,

156

:

whatever it is just choose.

157

:

One five minute chunk and a day.

158

:

To put your phone away and be fully

engaged with whoever or whatever

159

:

you're doing in that moment.

160

:

The third thing that I'm going to

do each day of this challenge is to

161

:

use my phone to uplift social media

and smartphones often get a bad rap.

162

:

And it's true that when we're not

intentional with our phone use, it

163

:

can be a negative thing, but wow, I

am so grateful to live in this day and

164

:

age of technology because there's so

much good we can do with our phones.

165

:

So each day during this challenge,

I will intentionally use my

166

:

phone as a tool to uplift.

167

:

Whether that's texting someone or calling

someone or posting something uplifting on

168

:

social media, watching an uplifting video,

learning a new skill, finding a recipe

169

:

on my phone and making that for someone.

170

:

Looking at pictures of happy

memories on my phone, sending a

171

:

picture of a good memory to someone.

172

:

Connecting with my son by looking

at the funny filters, like putting

173

:

funny filters on our faces.

174

:

And I'll be sharing what I do

each day on Instagram stories.

175

:

So you can watch those to get ideas of

how you want to use your phone to uplift.

176

:

And I'd also love to hear

what you choose to do as well.

177

:

So you can use the hashtag the

peaceful phone challenge, and then

178

:

also tag my account mindful with media

179

:

, if you want to join me in the

peaceful phone challenge, I will

180

:

include a link in the show notes

where you can sign up for free.

181

:

And I just want to make a note that.

182

:

This is already a crazy time of year.

183

:

And so I don't want this to feel

like an extra thing, but I really

184

:

do believe that intentionally doing

these three things each day will

185

:

make this season more peaceful.

186

:

And one where I will be more present.

187

:

And if I miss a day, then.

188

:

I'm not going to think twice about it.

189

:

In fact, I'm going to get excited.

190

:

Listen to last week's episode,

where we talk about expecting and

191

:

embracing mistakes, episode 32 and.

192

:

And just see it as anything I

do is good and extra and not.

193

:

Stop the challenge because

I don't do it perfectly.

194

:

And I hope you'll join me again.

195

:

I'll put the link in the show

notes for, you can sign up for the

196

:

challenge for free, and it has a

little, I'll send you a worksheet

197

:

where you can check off if you do it.

198

:

Honestly, I don't really

like checking off things.

199

:

I like just doing it for the doing it.

200

:

So I'm not going to use the check

box thing, but you are welcome to.

201

:

And I'm really looking forward to.

202

:

This holiday season of peace

and of really being present.
