8

:

Welcome to the Mindful With Media Podcast.

9

:

Hello.

10

:

Hello and welcome back.

11

:

Today, we get to talk about something that

I've been looking forward to discussing

12

:

on the podcast for quite a while now.

13

:

And that's this concept of.

14

:

Becoming a creator more

than we are a consumer.

15

:

And.

16

:

Because this podcast is called

mindful with media and my

17

:

focus is screens and phone use.

18

:

We will talk about what that

means in the context of.

19

:

Phones and social media, especially

being a creator more than a consumer, but

20

:

we're also going to take a step back and.

21

:

See how this applies to really all

aspects of our life, of how we can

22

:

be more of a creator than a consumer.

23

:

So I want to start by talking about

what it even means to be a creator.

24

:

What I mean by that.

25

:

And the definition I found

online of creator means.

26

:

A person that brings

something into existence.

27

:

Which isn't that just fascinating.

28

:

Another definition I found was somebody

who improves upon the world around them.

29

:

I loved that definition and

hearing that definition made me

30

:

want to be more of a creator.

31

:

Someone who improves

upon the world around me.

32

:

So if a creator is someone who

brings something into existence

33

:

or improves upon the world around

them, then what's a consumer.

34

:

A consumer is someone who purchases

goods and services for personal use.

35

:

Someone who eats something.

36

:

Someone who uses something.

37

:

Some other definitions I found where.

38

:

Someone who looks at content on social

media, someone who eats drinks or ingests.

39

:

Someone who uses up something

or absorb something.

40

:

So we've talked about what a

creator is, and we've talked

41

:

about what a consumer is and.

42

:

As I've been pondering about

the difference between.

43

:

Uh, creator and the consumer.

44

:

I believe that the main difference

between a creator and the consumer.

45

:

Is that.

46

:

Uh, creator takes what they consume.

47

:

And create something out of it.

48

:

Because we are all

going to consume, right?

49

:

We are going to.

50

:

See things on social media,

we're going to buy things.

51

:

We're going to eat things.

52

:

I'm trying to think of those other

definitions, about a consumer, right?

53

:

We are all going to consume things,

but I think somebody who's a creator.

54

:

Takes those things that they consume.

55

:

And create something out of it.

56

:

So maybe that's taking things that

they learn or see on social media.

57

:

And then actually applying

it to their lives.

58

:

Or.

59

:

Taking things that they learn on a

podcast and then having conversations

60

:

about it with other people or

really internalizing it and letting

61

:

it impact them or pondering it.

62

:

Or maybe they purchase things.

63

:

And then they use those things

that they buy to better their life

64

:

or better someone else's right.

65

:

Going back to the definition of a

creator, one of the definitions was

66

:

to improve upon the world around you.

67

:

So.

68

:

I think a creator takes those

things that they consume.

69

:

And then improves upon the world

with what they've consumed.

70

:

Whereas.

71

:

Uh, consumer simply takes.

72

:

Those things in without

producing anything else.

73

:

So.

74

:

We've all been there where you just

mindlessly scroll social media or.

75

:

You buy things because they're

on sale, but then you never use

76

:

it or they just take up space.

77

:

And I think that's the

difference between a creator.

78

:

And the consumer, and I'd love to

hear any thoughts you have on this

79

:

topic of creating versus consuming.

80

:

And I truly believe that we are

all designed to be creators.

81

:

I think that's why we feel more

fulfilled and accomplished.

82

:

When we create.

83

:

And I want to share a quote

that I really liked about this.

84

:

It says.

85

:

The desire to create is one of the

deepest yearnings of the human soul.

86

:

No matter our talents, education,

backgrounds, or abilities, we

87

:

each have an inherent wish.

88

:

To create something that

did not exist before.

89

:

Everyone can create you don't need

money, position or influence in order to

90

:

create something of substance or beauty.

91

:

And later on in the

episode, I'll talk about.

92

:

More ways that we can create more

than just typical ways that we think.

93

:

But I think it's easy.

94

:

You, when you hear about.

95

:

Creating to start to

doubt yourself, right.

96

:

To.

97

:

Feel incapable or feel scared

that you're going to fail with

98

:

whatever you try to create.

99

:

There's a lot of fear

that comes with that.

100

:

Or to think like, oh, I don't have the.

101

:

The ability to create,, because

you're thinking of how people

102

:

create in typical ways, but.

103

:

I'm the type of person that has

never considered myself creative.

104

:

I've never taken an art class.

105

:

My.

106

:

House is hardly decorated at all.

107

:

That is.

108

:

Not a way that I love to create.

109

:

And that doesn't necessarily mean

that I can't create in this way, but

110

:

I I've never been naturally drawn

111

:

to that type of.

112

:

creative process.

113

:

I very much have a math brain.

114

:

I majored in statistics.

115

:

I am a very logical

thinker, very analytical.

116

:

But I've learned that.

117

:

Creativity doesn't have to just be

painting or drawing or sculpting, like

118

:

sometimes how I think of creativity or

even like, Creating content online or.

119

:

Whatever it is baking or

whatever you're creating.

120

:

It's seriously, like so vast.

121

:

So if we go back to the

original definition of being a

122

:

creator, You're either improving

upon the world around you.

123

:

Or your.

124

:

Bringing something into existence

that didn't exist before.

125

:

And so.

126

:

That could be.

127

:

Creating laughter or

creating family memories or.

128

:

Creating harmony with people

or creating connections or.

129

:

There are a lot of synonyms

for creator that I found online

130

:

that also, I think give insights

on what it can mean to create.

131

:

So.

132

:

There was a writer, author, developer.

133

:

Composer designer, divisor

maker, inventor, producer,

134

:

originator, initiator, instigator.

135

:

Generator engineer architect,

mastermind, father, mother.

136

:

I think the ones that stood out

to me the most were the initiator

137

:

or the instigator, I think.

138

:

At different times in my life, that

has been a way that I've created.

139

:

It's really easy for me to.

140

:

Instigate activities.

141

:

Right?

142

:

. The planning things or going and

doing fun things and inviting

143

:

other people to come with me that.

144

:

That is a way for me to create, and

that's why it's fulfilling because

145

:

I am as a human being designed to

create, and it feels so good to create.

146

:

Even though it doesn't

have to look a certain way.

147

:

And I've been thinking about.

148

:

Other ways that I.

149

:

Create in my life in

ways that I am a creator.

150

:

And so I think the first thing that came

to mind was this podcast that I'm trying

151

:

to create and share goodness, as I.

152

:

Take things that I've learned.

153

:

And then.

154

:

Ponder them and apply them to my life.

155

:

And then with those.

156

:

Create new perspectives,

157

:

and then sharing those.

158

:

In new ways.

159

:

I try to create by posting

regularly on social media.

160

:

ANd it's actually

fascinating this concept of.

161

:

Being a creator more than you're a

consumer when you're on social media.

162

:

Because we know that there are people

who have the job title of creator, and

163

:

that typically means that they create

content on social media and websites,

164

:

whether that's videos, posts, blog, posts.

165

:

Podcasts, whatever it is, but

you don't have to be a creator

166

:

to create on social media.

167

:

And Dr.

168

:

Sarah Coyne.

169

:

She is a media researcher and she

led an eight year study on the

170

:

relationship between social media.

171

:

And mental health and one of

the things that they found.

172

:

Was that if you are an active

user, Instead of a passive user

173

:

when you're on social media.

174

:

You're much less likely to experience

the potential negative side effects.

175

:

So instead of just scrolling, when

you're on social media, actively comment.

176

:

Create your own posts to share,

respond to people's stories, even

177

:

just liking people's posts instead

of just scrolling past them.

178

:

You are more likely to have a

positive experience on social media.

179

:

If you are more active on

there, and this is a way to

180

:

create, instead of just consume.

181

:

As you comment and respond to

stories, you are creating connections.

182

:

As you post, you are creating ideas.

183

:

And you're creating experiences

for other people as they see

184

:

your posts or read your comments.

185

:

And I often hear people.

186

:

Talk about social media in a

way of like, oh, I don't really

187

:

post anything on social media.

188

:

Like as if that's a better thing, but

this research shows that as long as

189

:

you're posting for the right reasons, I

do want to point out that's important.

190

:

It's actually better for

you and for others to post.

191

:

Instead of just to look at other things,

to be a creator, not just a consumer.

192

:

And this will leave you feeling

more fulfilled because you

193

:

are designed to create it's.

194

:

One of the deepest yearnings

of your soul is to create.

195

:

And like I said, there are lots of

ways to create You don't have to

196

:

just do it on social media, but I

encourage you that if you do decide

197

:

to use social media and you're on

there to be a creator when you're on

198

:

there, if that's posting or if that's.

199

:

Commenting or responding to

stories or sharing content.

200

:

So every time I'm on social media,

I aim to engage with every post IC.

201

:

So I either comment on the post.

202

:

I like the post or I unfollow because

if I'm following too many accounts, it's

203

:

really easy for me to fall back into the

cycle of more consuming and less creating

204

:

another way that I.

205

:

Try to be a creator is by

creating a life that I love.

206

:

And for those of you who

came to the mastermind.

207

:

That was so powerful where we talked

about how to grow your business by

208

:

spending less than 30 minutes a day on

Instagram, you'll remember the activity

209

:

called setting up my dream life.

210

:

And this activity was actually

really powerful for me as we

211

:

worked through it together.

212

:

And because of this, I started

making some changes to my life.

213

:

I used to work on my business.

214

:

Almost every spare minute and.

215

:

I was pretty intentional about

planning times to not work.

216

:

Like I apply in times to be with

my kids and with me husband.

217

:

And so it was set up pretty balanced, but.

218

:

I just realized that.

219

:

I was working more than I wanted to.

220

:

And so I've decided to

cut back on my work hours.

221

:

And I now spend more time

doing things like playing

222

:

violin, just for the fun of it.

223

:

And working on puzzles while

listening to podcasts or audio books.

224

:

And I used to hear about people

doing things like this or doing

225

:

things that I wanted, like living

the life that I wanted to live.

226

:

And I would just think

like, all that'd be nice.

227

:

Like I wish I had time for that,

or I wish I had the money for.

228

:

Uh, babysitters.

229

:

I could get a break like that.

230

:

I wish I didn't have to work so

much so I could relax like that.

231

:

But.

232

:

I realized that I can

create the life that I love.

233

:

I can have those things too.

234

:

And so can you, you can design.

235

:

Your dream life and then make powerful

decisions to turn it into your reality.

236

:

And that sounds so cheesy

as I'm saying this.

237

:

But seriously, I am living proof of this.

238

:

That you can create a life that you love.

239

:

Okay.

240

:

That was kind of a long tangent, but

that's just one way that I am a creator

241

:

is by creating life that I love.

242

:

Other ways that I am trying to be a

creator and I only share these things

243

:

because I hope they're giving you

ideas of how you can lean into your.

244

:

Your instincts and your

cravings to be a creator.

245

:

I teach violin.

246

:

And I feel like that helps me too.

247

:

Help others write that definition

of improving upon the world

248

:

around you, help my students to.

249

:

Create and cultivate themselves into.

250

:

Better people.

251

:

Or I also create by playing my violin,

creating music there, I also tutor

252

:

I'm a math tutor and I feel like

that's a way that I create is by.

253

:

Helping other people.

254

:

To create the results that they

want in their life, or to create

255

:

better test scores or to create.

256

:

A better future for themselves.

257

:

I don't know.

258

:

I feel like I'm getting all deep

about this, but I also think

259

:

teaching my children, I spend most

of my time both day and night.

260

:

With my children nurturing them.

261

:

And I really believe that is a way to

create as I'm trying to help them to

262

:

learn and to grow and to become, and.

263

:

That's a form of creation for me.

264

:

And also I'm trying to help bring out

the good in them, which can be really

265

:

hard sometimes as I try to focus on the

good and my children, I feel like that.

266

:

Does a lot of things that helps.

267

:

Create the kind of person that I want

them to become, you know, even, okay.

268

:

I'm getting really like

maybe too deep here, but

269

:

Let's just think about

how you see your children.

270

:

And it's so easy to focus in

on their hard qualities, right?

271

:

That is what's right in front of our face.

272

:

But.

273

:

As you create.

274

:

An image.

275

:

In your mind of who, you know,

your child can become and

276

:

really who they are deep down.

277

:

Then you can help.

278

:

Your child become that type of person

and really just by seeing them that way

279

:

and viewing them in their goodness.

280

:

You can create that and make it a reality.

281

:

Okay.

282

:

I'm back out of my deep hole

of kind of deep thoughts, but.

283

:

I also love creating happy memories

as I take my kids on adventures.

284

:

That's really fun way for me to create.

285

:

So I encourage you just to

take some time to think about

286

:

ways that you already create.

287

:

You're probably creating

more than you realize.

288

:

And ways that you want to create

more in your life, whether that's

289

:

more practical ways with maybe.

290

:

Musical instruments or

painting or baking or.

291

:

Crocheting or.

292

:

Whatever it is, or.

293

:

maybe some more abstract

ways, whether that's.

294

:

Posting more on social media or even

just when you are on social media.

295

:

Being more engaged and an active user Or.

296

:

Creating memories or being an

instigator of things or creating.

297

:

New connections within your brain, just.

298

:

Creating a better version of yourself.

299

:

I don't know.

300

:

It's just so fun thinking about

all the ways that we can create

301

:

that are a little bit more abstract

than we typically think about.

302

:

And if you want more time to create in

your life, but you're having a hard time

303

:

actually making that happen because.

304

:

Life happens then.

305

:

The inside out might be a

really good fit for you.

306

:

This is an eight week

program starting in January.

307

:

That is designed to transform

your relationship with your phone.

308

:

So that you can ultimately

transform your life.

309

310

:

311

:

Really find time to create more

and I'll teach you how to do that

312

:

and if you are listening to this

podcast, then you are likely.

313

:

A creator.

314

:

You are likely somebody who wants to

create a better life for yourself and

315

:

create a better life for those around you.

316

:

And so.

317

:

Lean in to those.

318

:

Deepest yearnings of your

soul to be a creator.

319

:

And.

320

:
