Speaker:

I'm Alex, and you're listening to the Mindful with Media podcast.

2

:

Welcome back to the podcast.

3

:

We are getting ready to go down

to Capitol reef for the weekend.

4

:

Just a little.

5

:

Trip.

6

:

And so.

7

:

Usually I record my podcast episodes on

Friday afternoons during my work time.

8

:

But it's Friday morning and I'm

going to record this episode.

9

:

I would say more often than not.

10

:

I.

11

:

Make a general outline of what I

want to talk about on my podcast.

12

:

But this week, I.

13

:

Kind of want to just share some thoughts

that have been on my mind lately.

14

:

So.

15

:

I did a program with Amber

Smith, who is my current coach.

16

:

Called the art.

17

:

Of impossible, where we talked

about setting impossible goals in

18

:

four different areas of our lives.

19

:

And the program just ended and.

20

:

A week before the program ended

there was a lot of discussion about

21

:

being super committed to your goal.

22

:

Like.

23

:

A lot can still happen in a week.

24

:

And I totally believe that and feel that.

25

:

But this concept of being super committed.

26

:

To a goal.

27

:

I've just spent.

28

:

Thinking about a lot and.

29

:

Discussing a lot and

journaling a lot about

30

:

my approach.

31

:

Two.

32

:

Goal setting and achieving things.

33

:

And.

34

:

Yeah.

35

:

So I thought I might first

I can just share kind of my.

36

:

Some of my journal entry.

37

:

From a few days ago when

I was processing this.

38

:

So this was just from my morning

pages, which is a super trendy.

39

:

Idea right now where you right.

40

:

Just stream of thought,

whatever comes to your mind.

41

:

Three pages.

42

:

In the morning, like before

you do anything else and.

43

:

Sometimes I follow exactly that.

44

:

And often basically it's

just time to write for me.

45

:

It's just like, And not about

a specific thing, but just

46

:

write whatever's on my mind.

47

:

So this is from my morning pages.

48

:

I think I am supposed to have

this stronger drive to be all

49

:

in or super committed to a goal.

50

:

Like.

51

:

Set up to consistently make

10 K months by this Thursday.

52

:

That was one of the goals that I set

for one of my impossible goals that

53

:

I set for the art of impossible.

54

:

I don't know if that's just how I am.

55

:

And I prefer to live, or if I

have some secret fears or beliefs.

56

:

That are getting in the way of feeling

super hardcore, committed to a goal.

57

:

The idea of being so

committed to something.

58

:

Even when the resistance

shows up, just doesn't.

59

:

Resonate for me.

60

:

I'm still trying to figure it out because.

61

:

Obviously I'm doing something.

62

:

Right.

63

:

I've run multiple half marathons.

64

:

I run a marathon.

65

:

I consistently run during cold

dark mornings in the winter.

66

:

I go to bed by 9:00 PM almost every night.

67

:

I've consistently showed up in

my business and made more money

68

:

than I ever thought possible.

69

:

And I've done this for

three and a half years.

70

:

Maybe it does come back to.

71

:

Be do have.

72

:

Because of the underlying

beliefs I have about who I am.

73

:

I trust my body and my intuition and

don't force myself to do things that

74

:

don't resonate at the moment . And

a lot of it comes back to setting

75

:

up my environment to support me.

76

:

I run with people.

77

:

I charge my phone in the kitchen.

78

:

I have.

79

:

Plans outside with friends.

80

:

But also just the underlying

belief that I'm not shaming

81

:

myself into doing anything.

82

:

I do things because I genuinely want to.

83

:

So knowing this about myself, what do I

want to make happen before this Thursday?

84

:

So then I went on to journal

about what I actually wanted.

85

:

And I realized I wasn't

actually committed to that.

86

:

Goal of.

87

:

Making.

88

:

And not just making 10 K months,

but like setting, being set up to.

89

:

Consistently make 10 K months.

90

:

I realized like, And my heart of hearts.

91

:

It's not what I was.

92

:

Really committed to like, it was a,

that'd be cool if that happened, but.

93

:

I wasn't super committed to it.

94

:

And you can actually listen

to my podcast episode from.

95

:

Last week?

96

:

No, not last week, two weeks ago.

97

:

All about.

98

:

Getting clear on what you want and

the skill of getting what you want.

99

:

And.

100

:

Just the importance of that first step

of like, what do you actually want?

101

:

So it was really interesting because

that morning pages led me to.

102

:

Actually taking actions that

did get me closer to that.

103

:

Original goal of being set up to

consistently make 10 K months.

104

:

But.

105

:

It was from this place of.

106

:

Love and intuition and more of

that , feminine Slowey energy.

107

:

And.

108

:

Not from this place of like, I am

committed to this and I'm going to do

109

:

whatever it takes to make it happen.

110

:

And so.

111

:

Then I think it was

the next day, actually.

112

:

I was at an event.

113

:

I was at a mastermind

and kind of a shared.

114

:

My thoughts on this topic and.

115

:

Opened it up for discussion and ended

up receiving some great coaching on.

116

:

This idea and.

117

:

I realized a few things.

118

:

From that discussion and just

thinking about this some more.

119

:

But I realized that.

120

:

My idea of what it meant

to be committed to a goal.

121

:

Was single-minded like it's

possible for me to be committed.

122

:

To a goal.

123

:

And I don't even know if I'd

like the word goal, but maybe.

124

:

Committed to.

125

:

An outcome or a process or.

126

:

Way of doing things or a habit or

whatever it is committed to something.

127

:

Without that feeling of intensity

and that feeling of like,

128

:

Yeah, intensity, I think is the best word.

129

:

But sometimes with that feeling of

intensity, I think of like grasping

130

:

anus or desperation or like, Like.

131

:

Grit.

132

:

And I think.

133

:

There are lots of different.

134

:

Ways to interpret these words, right?

135

:

Like, I don't think these are bad things.

136

:

But it's just.

137

:

That.

138

:

Doesn't resonate for me.

139

:

And doesn't.

140

:

Work for me.

141

:

And I will say this,

like I genuinely believe.

142

:

With like deep down genuinely believe that

there is not one right way to approach.

143

:

Accomplishing things.

144

:

That that more like intense.

145

:

Commitment to.

146

:

A goal or an outcome, or I don't even

know if it's the outcome, but yeah.

147

:

Intense commitment to doing something.

148

:

Is actually very helpful.

149

:

And I think it works for some

people and even like in the

150

:

realm of business, I think.

151

:

Like that.

152

:

That drive and that hustle, like

some people like really like that.

153

:

It's really fun for them

and invigorating for them.

154

:

And.

155

:

So I, I want to say like, I don't

want you to feel like, because I'm

156

:

figuring out what works for me.

157

:

That what works for me also has

to be the right thing for you.

158

:

I think.

159

:

You can figure out for

yourself, like what.

160

:

What works for you?

161

:

And I, I, I think the reason that I was

contemplating this so much is because.

162

:

I was wondering if I was.

163

:

Secretly like self-sabotaging or

stopping myself from achieving

164

:

things that I actually want.

165

:

Because of.

166

:

The way that I approach things.

167

:

Have, you know, if I could.

168

:

Change some underlying beliefs, like maybe

I did have some sneaky beliefs about.

169

:

Fear of.

170

:

Not getting, you know, not reaching it.

171

:

And so I was like, well, I don't

even want to try because I'm scared

172

:

I won't achieve it or whatever.

173

:

It was like, I had to really

check with myself if that's.

174

:

Y, I don't like to be intensely

committed to something.

175

:

If it's because.

176

:

There's this underlying fear

or self sabotage going on.

177

:

But when I really got to the root of it,

I realized that was not the case for me.

178

:

That.

179

:

Aye.

180

:

Oh, th that like, I realized it wasn't

just that I wanted to be set up to make.

181

:

10 K months.

182

:

Consistently, like have a reliable.

183

:

Income coming for 10 K months.

184

:

But it was that I wanted to.

185

:

I was attached to the way.

186

:

That I got there, right?

187

:

Like they're not attached.

188

:

I was committed to.

189

:

Achieving this.

190

:

Goal this impossible

goal in a way that felt.

191

:

Flowy and from this feminine energy.

192

:

And so I would rather be set up to make.

193

:

, a less amount of money.

194

:

But in a way that feels flowy.

195

:

And so I didn't.

196

:

I could have, you know,

pushed and intensely.

197

:

Gone after those that, that.

198

:

That 10 caved, consistent months.

199

:

But it was not the way that I want

to continue running my business

200

:

and continue living my life.

201

:

And the other thing

that I realized is that.

202

:

I am committed to a lot of things

in my life that I, it was not

203

:

worth it to me to prioritize that.

204

:

Above other things that really

matter to me, I really prioritize.

205

:

Going to bed by 9:00 PM.

206

:

Like I said, I really prioritize.

207

:

When I'm not working,

I'm really not working.

208

:

And I am with my family.

209

:

And I didn't want to spend, you know,

there were times like, When as I

210

:

was kind of processing, seeing this.

211

:

Where after dinner, I would

start to think like, oh, you

212

:

know, like maybe I should go.

213

:

Send that email or.

214

:

Make a post or whatever it was.

215

:

And I was like, no, that is not my.

216

:

Priority.

217

:

That is not the way I'm,

I'm more committed to this

218

:

way of running my business.

219

:

Then I am too.

220

:

Achieving that.

221

:

That goal.

222

:

And so just recognizing that we are.

223

:

Multifaceted.

224

:

Beings and not even just

multifaceted, but multi.

225

:

Passionate, maybe.

226

:

That there.

227

:

Lots of parts of our life that are

important to us and we're committed to.

228

:

And so I don't think you

need to put one goal.

229

:

Higher than the rest.

230

:

Like it's, it is kind

of this like balance of.

231

:

What matters to me and what

am I willing to give and take?

232

:

And, and this is also to

say like, I don't think.

233

:

I think.

234

:

It was still possible to achieve

that goal of setting up, setting

235

:

myself up for consistent 10 K months.

236

:

From that place of.

237

:

Flowiness and still

holding boundaries around.

238

:

My personal life and my family life, like.

239

:

I don't think you have to

choose one or the other.

240

:

I really do think both are possible

because I've seen that happen again

241

:

again, in my business with other.

242

:

Quote unquote goals.

243

:

I think what I needed to do is like this.

244

:

This experience

245

:

I didn't achieve that.

246

:

Like, Actual number goal.

247

:

And I think it speaks well, I'm not.

248

:

Lola.

249

:

Aye.

250

:

Made a lot of breakthrough it's around.

251

:

Well, one, just getting clear on

how I want my business model to be.

252

:

And then a law of.

253

:

Mindset.

254

:

Beliefs that were.

255

:

Getting in the way of me.

256

:

Pursuing the school originally.

257

:

And then I feel like right at the

end there, I was like figuring out

258

:

like I was in a better place too.

259

:

Actually start pursuing that

goal because I had done all the.

260

:

The inner work and not to

say my inner worker's done.

261

:

That is a process.

262

:

I will be.

263

:

Working on forever and always, and I love.

264

:

The inner work that comes from.

265

:

Being a business owner.

266

:

And I already kind of shared

this from my journal entry, but I.

267

:

I feel like.

268

:

The reason that I have achieved,

what I have in my life is not

269

:

because I've set certain goals.

270

:

Like.

271

:

A year ago, I did a workshop on.

272

:

How to make.

273

:

Radical changes in your

life without setting goals.

274

:

And.

275

:

I think there's actually

a podcast episode, kind of

276

:

talking a little bit about it.

277

:

But I did before the workshop that

I can link in the show notes, but.

278

:

I shared in there.

279

:

I used to be really goal happy

and love to like set goals.

280

:

And I do think.

281

:

Setting goals as powerful.

282

:

And like I shared earlier, like, I'm

figuring out what's working for me.

283

:

This is not what works for everyone.

284

:

But for me, What's more powerful than.

285

:

Setting a goal or being

committed to a certain.

286

:

Habit or something.

287

:

Is.

288

:

Setting up systems.

289

:

And changing my underlying beliefs.

290

:

Beliefs about who I am.

291

:

Beliefs about the type of person that I am

beliefs about, where my value comes from.

292

:

Beliefs about other people.

293

:

That is way more.

294

:

Important and not even

important, but effective.

295

:

For me then choosing a goal and

being super committed to that.

296

:

Goal.

297

:

Like, I think of a lot

of the things that I.

298

:

Have achieved in my life and

the way that I live, it's just.

299

:

Who I am.

300

:

It's just what I do.

301

:

And, and I've talked about this.

302

:

Earlier in other episodes, but just

this idea of like, Highest level.

303

:

Yes.

304

:

Is that what it's called?

305

:

I've heard that phrase, but basically

just for example, going outside, I

306

:

do the 1000 hours upsides challenge,

which I guess is technically a goal.

307

:

But.

308

:

Often when we're getting

ready to go outside.

309

:

I do not feel like going outside.

310

:

I just want to sit in my house.

311

:

And I know from experience.

312

:

Like, and not even from experience,

but just like deep down in my soul.

313

:

I know that I actually

do want to go outside.

314

:

And so I think it's.

315

:

In those moments when there's

resistance to doing something that I.

316

:

Have committed to.

317

:

It's like deep down.

318

:

Just like really getting deep.

319

:

Like what do I actually want?

320

:

Like not what does my natural

man surface level want?

321

:

Like what do I actually

want in this moment?

322

:

And then making the

decision from there and.

323

:

Taking action from there.

324

:

And not just from this place of like,

325

:

what feels good right now, but I

also think that's important too.

326

:

Just like trusting myself in

the moment because sometimes.

327

:

We choose to stay inside

and have a cozy day inside.

328

:

And that's a really good thing too.

329

:

But yeah, just trusting.

330

:

Trusting myself in those moments

that I really do know ultimately.

331

:

What's best and what I really want.

332

:

And I think the way that I get.

333

:

Two.

334

:

Being able to trust myself that way.

335

:

Is.

336

:

Deep down, internalizing.

337

:

This idea that my worth.

338

:

Does not come from anything.

339

:

I have achieved anything I will achieve.

340

:

How I'm spending my time.

341

:

My goals, my routines, my systems.

342

:

My accomplishments, how hard I work,

the effort I put in, like, None of that.

343

:

Determines my value as a person.

344

:

I am just as valuable on the days.

345

:

That I.

346

:

Stay in bed all day and do nothing.

347

:

As on the days when I go

running at 6:00 AM and then.

348

:

Take my kids on an adventure outside.

349

:

And then.

350

:

Come home and eat a well-balanced lunch.

351

:

And then.

352

:

Signed some new clients and.

353

:

Work on my business and you

know, like whatever it is, like.

354

:

That does not make me a better.

355

:

Person.

356

:

And I really believe that, like I.

357

:

It's like making more emotional.

358

:

I thought I would like, I am.

359

:

My worth is cannot be changed.

360

:

And so I feel like because

I have like such a delete.

361

:

Deep belief about that.

362

:

I'm not making any decisions

out of like, well, that would

363

:

like make me a better person.

364

:

It's like genuinely, because

I want to do that thing.

365

:

I will share one last

thought on this topic.

366

:

Thanks for listening to my

rambling and processing.

367

:

And I would love to hear any.

368

:

Thoughts you have on any of these ideas?

369

:

As I always say, I'm always open to.

370

:

If you have a different

perspective, I love hearing.

371

:

Different perspectives on things.

372

:

So if you agree with certain

things, I'd love to hear that.

373

:

And if you disagree or have a, an

alternative perspective or opinion,

374

:

I would love to hear that too.

375

:

But the last thing I want to share is.

376

:

I went to the butterfly museum at

Thanksgiving point this week with.

377

:

A friend and our kids.

378

:

And.

379

:

So there's like butterflies

flying all around.

380

:

You can go into like the

conservatories that what it's called.

381

:

Like that part where there's like

actual butterflies laying around.

382

:

And then they have this like

glass window where you can

383

:

see all these cocoons hanging.

384

:

And.

385

:

A little like information thing

about how the process works of a

386

:

caterpillar turning into a butterfly.

387

:

And I feel like that's such a

stereotypical analogy to use.

388

:

But it is crazy that a caterpillar,

like literally a caterpillar.

389

:

Turns into a butterfly.

390

:

Those are so.

391

:

Radically different from each other.

392

:

One of them crawls.

393

:

One of them flies.

394

:

One of them is kind of ugly.

395

:

And one of them is like so beautiful.

396

:

At least some butterflies, a lot

of butterflies are really pretty.

397

:

And.

398

:

It is anyways, I would love to do

more research about that process of

399

:

how that changes and I'm sure there's

some really cool insights there, but.

400

:

I was just thinking about

how radical that changes.

401

:

Of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly.

402

:

Andy.

403

:

It obviously like.

404

:

Takes, I don't know if effort's

the right word, but like, It has to

405

:

be in a cocoon for a while and it.

406

:

It does things to make that change like.

407

:

It is a process.

408

:

For it to happen.

409

:

But the process is not forced.

410

:

And that is so powerful to me that.

411

:

It's not a forced thing from it to like

force its way to turn into a butterfly.

412

:

Like it does kind of just happen.

413

:

And like I said, like, it's

not like, it just like, boom.

414

:

It happens like.

415

:

There are steps that it has

to take for it to happen, but

416

:

it's, it's not forced steps.

417

:

And that just totally

resonated with me that.

418

:

Caterpillar is.

419

:

Designed.

420

:

To become a butterfly.

421

:

That's who it is supposed

to come become like.

422

:

That's the way that it is created.

423

:

And.

424

:

All they have to do is allow

that process to happen.

425

:

And I just think that it it's

the same with us, that you are.

426

:

Designed to become.

427

:

Uh, Butterfly and I don't know, like.

428

:

They all become different

kinds of butterflies and.

429

:

I do think that you have.

430

:

I don't think it's just like, K

like whoever become is who I become.

431

:

Like, I do think it's important to.

432

:

I don't even know if like yeah,

like discover who you want to become

433

:

and what you want to become, but

I don't think you need to force.

434

:

The process.

435

:

I think you, if you, if this

resonates with you this way of

436

:

achieving things, you can allow this.

437

:

Process to happen.

438

:

Allow yourself to.

439

:

Go through the process of.

440

:

Becoming.

441

:

The type of butterfly that

you are designed to become.

442

:

And.

443

:

I will just end this by saying, I know

there's a book called power versus force.

444

:

I think it might be by David Hawkins.

445

:

I'll have to look into that link

in the show notes as well, but.

446

:

I am realizing, I think I want to read

that because I think that's what this.

447

:

Whole podcast episode about and

what I've been processing this week.

448

:

Has been about is this

idea of power versus force.

449

:

So.

450

:

I am starting a new.

451

:

Series.

452

:

I don't know.

453

:

I'm starting something new on my podcast.

454

:

Where I'm going to do a

book club every month.

455

:

So I'm just finalizing the books

that I want to read for the year.

456

:

I'm going to do one book every month.

457

:

If you want, you can read along.

458

:

But the idea is I'm going to have people.

459

:

Signed up like one person

signed up per book.

460

:

That you will also commit to

reading that book and then you'll

461

:

come on the podcast with me.

462

:

And I'll have a few.

463

:

Discussion questions, but we can kind of

just share like, The gist of what the book

464

:

is and then discuss it on the podcast.

465

:

So if you have any book

recommendations for that, . And

466

:

or if you would like to be.

467

:

I guessed in that.

468

:

Way of calming.

469

:

Chat about a book with me DME

on Instagram and let me know.

470

:

And.

471

:

That is all I have for today.

472

:

Thanks for letting me process

and ramble on here today.

473

:

And.

474

:

we'll talk to you next week.
